Plant material & silvicultural treatments

Xylosylve is designed around the study of 8 silvicultural treatments to answer specific scientific questions and raise key understandings with respect to plants, stands and ecosystems. 

The 8 treatments are:

  • Maritime Pine « standard »
  • Taeda Pine « standard »
  • Maritime Pine « biomass »
  • Maritime Pine « low input »
  • Maritime Pine « optimized nutrition »
  • Eucalyptus
  • Mixed Semi-dedicated (Eucalyptus ; Maritime Pine)
  • Mix of 6 species

 « MP Standard » Treatment

Objectives :

  • Indicator of wood production type with respect to other treatments. 
  • Allow comparison with what is now done. 
  • Test the long-term results of VF3 new plant material.

Objectives :

  • Test hypothesis of species that grows faster and straighter in good station.
  • Study a supposedly better rooting than that of the maritime pine. 
  • Check the assumptions of a different sensitivity to pests than the maritime pine.

  • Test ability to compensate nutrient exports and maintain soil fertility through mineral fertilization.

Objectives :

  • Get as close as possible to the conditions of a plantation done directly in litter or without tillage. 
  • Test effects of organic matter input on production and the environment. 
  • Test the effects of reduced tillage supposed to minimize CO2 emissions.

Objectives:

  • Test the hypothesis of optimizing the use of resources by two species with different operating strategies. 
  • Test the capabilities and effects of a mixed production (wood and biomass)

Choice of species :

  • Associate species with varied features
  • Implantation and production capacity of the specie in our soil and climate conditions 
  • To not retest all the species already used in other projects (Reinfforce, Climaq)

Objectives :

  • Test the hypothesis of an optimized use of resources by operating strategies which are different and supposedly complementary. 
  • Check the hypothesis of better resistance and resilience of a high biodiversity ecosystem.
